What is Rotational Molding?
The rotational molding process is typically used for making hollow plastic parts. A heated hollow mold is filled with a specific weight of polymer material, usually in power or liquid form. The mold is then slowly rotated, typically along two axes of rotation with varying speeds, causing the softened material to disperse and stick to the walls of the mold. The mold rotates and subsequent polymer layers cover the inner surface of the mold until the entire polymer pool disappears. The mold continues to rotate during the heating and cooling phases to avoid sagging or deformation and to help maintain even part thickness. Rotationally molded parts are typically designed with a nominal wall thickness in mind, however depending on rotational speeds and heat transfer, the wall thickness distribution can vary.
