What is Compression Molding?
Compression molding involves placing a premeasured material (“charge” or “pre-form”) into an open mold which is closed with a compression piston to form into the shape of the mold. Usually, the mold consists of a top and bottom half. The charge is placed in the bottom mold and the top mold is compressed down with force. The charge is prepared by determining the proper amount of material to fill the part’s mold. If the charge is too big, excess material will seep out of the mold and result in excess material known as flash. The even pressure applied ensures that the resin fills all crevices of the mold to get a well-formed part. The mold is often heated to help soften and cure the material. Once molding is completed any excess material that is squeezed out of the seams of the mold is removed.
